Inside

Winter
still bites,
cold outside today.
I’ll stay inside, keeping
warm.

We did go out for a bike ride this morning, on the tandem, but it was cold. I haven’t felt warm since we got back – not until I put on an extra layer of clothing! The sun came through for a brief visit but with no warmth in it. We are forecast a cold week; Spring is in a slight retreat despite more blossom and daffodils in evidence.

In the Air

Feel
the change
in the air.
Blue sky, bird song;
Spring.

Deep Freeze

Deep freeze.
The birds empty the feeders.
I can’t break the ice on the pond.
Spring retreats, regroups.

Springtide

The tide of Spring
arrives like waves
climbing up the beach;
advance, retreat,
advance, retreat…
advance…

Hair Cut

The cherry tree
has had a hair cut.

Now it looks as forlorn
as a newly shorn sheep.

But when the Spring comes
with its new leaves and blossom
the scars will be forgotten.

Morning Frost

When morning frost has gone
and I hear birds sing for Spring
my heart joins the song.

Digging

It’s back-breaking work
digging new ground for planting,
but so rewarding.

Being unable to go abroad for our usual spring trip and in view of the current circumstances we are extending our small vegetable patch this year. Looking forward to more fresh produce!

Sweet Treats?

Finding something to eat?

I have probably mentioned before that we have a lovely grassy bank on the other side of the road opposite our house. It boasts several trees and in the spring it has a wonderful display of daffodils. From time to time I go and pick up those that have been broken off, giving them a chance of a slightly longer life by putting them in a vase of water. I collected a few this morning but left one that was beyond hope on the ground. Later when I went out I noticed a crow pecking at it and appearing to eat. I had no idea crows exhibited this sort of behaviour and wonder what it was eating!

February Fill-Dyke

Winter and Spring still battle it out
and February Fill-Dyke does its work
with greater enthusiasm than is truly needed,
to the detriment of many.

Much of the UK is still troubled with flooding and the rain continues to fall.

Spring Emerges

And still the rain comes down,
now with threats of sleet and snow.
Strong winds bluster still and blow,
while Spring emerges all around.
