Patterns of perfect leaf shapes
stuck to the pavement
as if inlaid.
Natural art.

Thorny Problem

Briar branch still bearing rose-hips
permanently wind-bent over the garden wall
and across the pavement at body height.
We cut it off, its lethal thorns
cling to my clothes like a traumatized child.

Black Ice

Black ice on the pavement
makes for uncertain footing.
I cross the street.
