Unturned

Leaving
no leaf
unturned, searching for
any grubs hiding below.
Blackbird.

Still Air

Washing hangs limply
in the still air.
I watch as from the cherry tree
a lone leaf drops.

Autumn Equinox

Today is the Autumn Equinox.
I celebrate with two quotations about Autumn for you:

“Autumn is a second Spring,
when every leaf is a flower.”

Albert Camus (1913-1960)

“There is a harmony in Autumn,
and a lustre in its sky…”

Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822)

Suspended

Suspended…
by an invisible thread,
hanging…
in the air above my head,
a leaf freed from the tree
yet unable to fly,
nor yet to fall
to earth
to die.

Gold Leaf

Still in full leaf the sycamore
has been painted gold
with here and there a tinge of green
where the paintbrush missed.

Unseen

The breeze brushes past the beech tree:
an unseen spirit breathes
and another leaf falls.
