An Elfje Valentine

OK — it’s a day late, sorry but I don’t post on Tuesdays!

Spring Valentine

O my Valentine,
it makes my heart sing
to see the signs of Spring
pushing upwards in the garden
despite the rain and wind.

Valentine Haiku

My true Valentine,
you fill my life with sunshine
all the seasons through.

Christmas Gifts

“Christmas gift suggestions:

To your enemy, forgiveness.
To an opponent, tolerance.
To a friend, your heart.
To a customer, service.
To all, charity.
To every child, a good example.
To yourself, respect.”

Oren Arnold

Cold crept into the house
and into my heart
after you had gone
through the window
the sun did not shine.

This is my first attempt at the Tanka form (or should I say free-form!). It was inspired by the spell of cold weather we have had after a glorious week that was more like summer and also by my husband’s absence for a few days just as the weather changed (he will be back so it isn’t as tragic as it sounds!). Today the sun has returned but it is not as warm as last week.

Precious Gifts

Was it so many years ago you stole
my heart from me and swore to keep it safe?
In return you gave me yours to hold —
a fair exchange — I have it still, I know it’s beat.
Such precious gifts we gave back then,
precious still those promises we keep.

Lindow Common

There was a time we would carry, my cousins and I,
the canvas canoes to the Black Lake
and paddle them on the shallow water.
But now the bank is overgrown
with gorse and weeds, and fenced all round
so you can scarcely see the water,
no chance at all to reach the edge or venture on it.
The heart and soul has left the Common – gone.

A robin sings his heart out in the holly,
his breast a coppery orange
beside the full ripe redness of the berries.

Blessing 3

“May the blessing of light be on you —
light without and light within.
May the blessed sunlight shine on you
and warm your heart
til it glows like a great peat fire.”

Thank you all for looking in while I was away. Got back from the Isle of Man in the early hours of this morning so we are a bit travel fatigued and so no original stone just yet. I have posted another of the Blessings I intended to post while we were away. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to schedule a week’s worth before we went and the hotel internet access was not functioning so I couldn’t post while we were there. Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible! I am looking forward to catching up with all your posts during my absence.

Blessing 1

“May there always be work for your hands to do.
May your purse always hold a coin or two.
May the sun always shine on your window pane.
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near you and
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.”
