Bumble Bee

bumble bee,
no obvious reason,
on our picnic table.

Female blackbird by the roadside,
hit by a car perhaps, bloodied and dead.
Are there un-incubated eggs nearby
or maybe hatchlings left unfed?

Sometimes, like when
I find a young thrush
dead on the mat,
I find it rather hard
to like my cat.

Rememberance poppyDead and dying
like fallen soldiers;
leaves on the grass.

This one for ‘Remembrance Day’ today – although all the services and ceremonies took place over the weekend. Britain adopted the poppy as a symbol of remembrance for all those killed in war after WWI, when poppies were the first flowers to bloom in the killing fields of France.

Given Up For Dead

A plant that I had given up for dead
has reappeared in flower amongst the weeds.
I wish I could remember what it’s called.
