Cradled

Cradled gently in my hands
I release the butterfly that flew
through the summer-open door
to flutter ineffectively
against the window pane.
I watch it fly away.

I’ve saved a bird once that came down the chimney flue. The cap blocks that entry off now. Smoke can go out, but no birdies in.
